An abnormal exit of tissue or an organ through the wall of its cavity is called a Hernia. A hiatal hernia is said to occur when the upper part of the stomach bulges into the chest through an opening (hiatus) in the diaphragm (muscle separating the chest from the stomach).  According to reputable hernia surgeons in Fort Worth, TX, the condition is mostly found in people over the age of 50 years.

Causes

Many weight loss doctors have identified several reasons for a Hiatus Hernia.

  • Being born with an abnormal hiatus crevice.
  • Accidents pertaining to the hiatus or esophagus area.
  • Change in the size of the diaphragm as you grow older.
  • Spike in pressure inside the belly due to obesity, pregnancy, lifting heavy weights, and coughing, among others.

Symptoms

These are some of the common symptoms experienced by people with Hiatus Hernia.

  • Irritation or pain swallowing food and beverages.
  • Epigastric or chest pains.
  • Severe heartburn or gastroesophageal (GRED).
  • Bad taste in the mouth.
  • Excessive burping.
  • Bloating and vomiting.
  • Breathlessness.

Diagnosis

Many weight loss doctors recommend the following tests to successfully diagnose Hiatal Hernia.

Endoscopy

A thin tube is slid through the throat and passed down to the esophagus and then to the stomach. This endoscopic probe is attached to a camera that allows the doctor to see whether or not the stomach is pushing up to the diaphragm. Any other obstruction or discrepancy would also be diagnosed.

Barium X-Ray

The patient is made to drink a liquid containing barium before taking an X-ray. This X-ray provides a clear silhouette of the upper digestive tract.  It allows the weight loss doctor to determine the presence and location of a protrusion of the stomach through the diaphragm for a successful diagnosis.

Treatment

A majority of the Hiatal hernia cases do not require treatment and can be fixed with lifestyle changes. However, in severe cases, patients may require medication or surgery.

Lifestyle Changes

  • Quit Smoking.
  • Lose extra weight.
  • Do not wear attire that creates pressure on the belly.
  • Eat smaller meals.
  • Limit the intake of fatty or fried foods. Avoid alcohol, vinegar, chocolate, and caffeine.
  • Do not intake acidic foods, like orange juice, tomato sauces, or sodas.

Hiatal Hernia Surgery and medication in Fort Worth is advised if the patient experiences acid reflux.

Medication

  • Antiacids to neutralize stomach acid.
  • H2-receptor blockers to lower acid production.
  • Proton pump inhibitors to prevent acid production in order to heal the esophagus.

Surgery

In some cases, surgery is also recommended. Doctors will advise surgery if the patient has a para esophageal hernia (stomach pushing through the hiatus) in order to prevent stomach strangulation. Laparoscopic surgery has reduced risks of infection, scarring and a faster recovery period compared to other traditional surgeries.
