What is Gallbladder Disease?

The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ located beneath the liver that stores bile, a digestive fluid that helps break down fats. Gallbladder disease refers to conditions in which this organ does not function properly, most commonly due to gallstones or inflammation. When gallstones block the normal flow of bile or the gallbladder becomes inflamed or infected, it can lead to symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, nausea, bloating, and vomiting, often triggered after eating fatty foods. The most common and effective treatment is cholecystectomy, a surgical procedure to remove the gallbladder. Risk factors for gallbladder disease include obesity, rapid weight loss, a high-fat or low-fiber diet, diabetes, pregnancy, certain cholesterol-lowering medications, and a family history of gallstones.
