There are a lot of ways to lose weight. Just as obesity is a spectrum of different diseases and weights, all the treatments are on a spectrum too.

Diet plans and medications have their place. The FDA would suggest that they are appropriate for some patients with a BMI of 27kg/m2 or higher.

But diet pills have their own downside and may not be suitable for people with certain health problems. Some diet medications even require daily injections to be effective.

What Is Bariatric Surgery?

Bariatric surgery (we’re a surgical practice that specializes in bariatric surgery) is considered the gold standard for weight loss. Not only it is effective and durable, but in 2018, it’s never been safer. Gastric bypass goes back to 1961 and we’ve learned a lot about how to (and how not to) do these operations.

Nonetheless, bariatric surgery is still surgery. Surgery is not for everyone, and even those who I may feel are best suited by bariatric surgery, often don’t want it (and I don’t blame them). Surgery can be a scary prospect and surgery is not reversible – we have an old saying in the operating room, “measure twice, cut once.”

So what are your options?

If you’re above a BMI of 30kg/m2 and below a BMI of 40kg/m2* and you’re looking for a non-invasive procedure to help you lose weight, then maybe the Obalon balloon system is right for you.

*Anything above or below that BMI number you’d be off-label to receive a balloon, but it could be done.
